Medical Centre for Molecular Biology (MCMB) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana was established in 1992 as a basic research/translation centre to promote and coordinate research and education in the field of medical molecular biology/genetics among institutes of the Faculty of Medicine and clinical institutions in Ljubljana. The preceeding core research group of the Centre and Centre itself in the period 1987-90 initiated molecular genetic analysis of monogenic diseases in Slovenia and from 1990-2000 played crucial role in translating basic research to Slovenian molecular diagnostic practice and in establishing molecular biology laboratories at partner medical institutions. Recently research and education are focused to genomic and functional genomic studies of complex polygenic and multifactorial disorders.
